North West Castle, a castle with a curling rink

The North West Castle is located near Dumfries, Galloway and Stranraer, in Scotland. This ancient castle is a hotel with its own curling rink.


The hotel has 72 double rooms. Each room has a double bed, a bathroom and a lounge. All rooms have a television set, a trouser press, coffee and tea making machines and mineral water. There are rooms with views towards the bay and rooms with views towards Lake Ryan. The hotel is adapted for guests with mobility issues, and there are several ramps and a lift.

The hotel organizes activities for families. There are family rooms and there are discounts available when two children stay in the same room and suite as two adults.

There are five suites at the hotel. The suites are decorated with traditional furniture and designs. One of the suites has several balconies with views towards the bay and the lake. The Honeymoon Suite has a four poster bed.

Price for family and standard rooms starts from 72€ per room per night including breakfast, and is around 96€ per night with three meals. Families get a discount per child.


The hotel has two restaurants. In the hotel’s restaurants guests will be able to enjoy many dishes that are made from local ingredients and that vary depending on the season. There are gluten free menus and vegetarian menus.

During the curling season guests will be able to enjoy dinners at the Alpine restaurant. The restaurant, decorated with traditional Alpine designs, is known for its steaks, soups and desserts. The Alpine Lounge is a large lounge that serves lunches with views towards the curling rink.

Sir John Ross built this castle after returning from an Arctic expedition. He decided to build a replica of his ship, the Victory, in what now is the hotel’s Ross Bar.

The hotel has an indoor pool that has direct access to the hotel’s spa. There is a gym, a sauna and a hall where guests can play pool and play tennis.

The hotel is one of the few places that has its own curling rink. Guests will be able to enjoy curling lessons. Those guests who visit this hotel specifically for its curling rink will be able to enjoy three curling matches per day.

During their stay guests will be able to enjoy many activities, from curling and golf to tours of nearby castles and walks around the gardens. Guests who visit the area for these specific activities are offered special packages.


The hotel’s conference centre is a large area where guests can organize events. There are several conference rooms. The Jubilee Suite is a hall where guests can organize conferences, private dinners and events of up to 180 people. Inside the Jubilee Suite is the Jubilee Room, which can hold up to 60 guests, and the Ballroom, designed for 200 guests.

The Edinburgh Suite can be rented with all the technical equipment. The Edinburgh Suite has two halls, the Edinburgh Hall that can accommodate up to 100 people, and the Prince Philip Hall, where events of up to 90 people can be organized.

For 30€ per guest per day firms can rent the event halls, enjoy a coffee and tea break accompanied by snacks, lunch at the hotel’s restaurant, complimentary mineral water and paper and pens. For 114€ per guest per night each person participating in the conference will be able to spend a night in an individual room, have a full Scottish breakfast and dinner, and access to the conference hall.


The hotel is located in Stanraer, next to Stanraer Bay, a large port that connects Ireland and Scotland. Loch Ryan is located a short walk away from the hotel.

Near the hotel there are several golf clubs. Guess will be able to visit many of the region’s gardens, the main gardens being the Glenwhan gardens, Castle Kennedy gardens and Logan Botanical Gardens. A couple of kilometers away from the hotel is the Kirkcudbright Wildlife Park and the Caerlaverock Natural Reserve.

The castle is one of Stranraer’s most visited places. Typical activities in the region are visiting the many gardens and the nearby town, where Castle Douglas is located and where many markets are organized. The cliffs, located nearby, offer views towards part of Ireland and the Isle of Man. From Stanraer port guests can take a short trip to Belfast.
