The Marqués de Riscal Hotel is located in Elciego, in Spain. This hotel was designed by Frank Gehry, an architect known for his unique architectural style that can be seen throughout the hotel.

Architecture.

Sometimes known as The Twentieth Century Château, the hotel’s building was designed by Frank O. Gehry. The building is a giant structure shaped like a coloured metal wave.

The hotel has several types of rooms. All rooms have carved cherry tree furniture, flat screen televisions and many other technological appliances from the prestigious Bang&Olufsen firm. As is customary for this category of hotels, the linen used for bedsheets is made from the best Egyptian linen and is signed by Yves Delorme. Guests can choose any of the eight different types of pillows offered to increase their comfort, and all duvet covers are also made from several different materials, thus allowing the guests to enjoy a truly relaxing atmosphere.

All the rooms in this hotel remind one of a gallery dedicated to the oriental arts, since each room displays various artefacts dating from the time when the ancient dynasties of Mongolia or China ruled the territory. Suite 163 is the jewel in this crown’s hotel. The 380 square metre suite has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and four terraces. A large Hermés mural decorates one of the walls. The other bedroom has two double rooms, an en-suite bathroom, a large working desk with a 24 inch Mac and a television. The living room has two Philip Bouix sofas, a bang&Olufsen flat screen television and oriental decorations and statues. The Puerta de América Hotel is located near the centre of Madrid, in Spain. The hotel was designed by numerous architects, designers and artists. The hotel’s façade is painted in a variety of bright colours with words in many languages written across the balconies. The fusion of a classy decoration and an unexpected mixture of colours and languages creates a most interesting effect.

This five star hotel is a fusion of several different art and design currents. The merger of several very diverse atmospheres, designs, materials and colours creates a rather comfortable unique space.

The hotel has twelve floors, each floor designed by a different team of designers and architects. Designers from more than nineteen different studios have worked on this project, and some of the most famous names include Teresa Sapey, Victorio&Lucchino, Norman Foster, Kathryn Findlay and Arata Isozaki, amongst many others.

There are several different types of rooms. There are several double rooms, deluxe rooms, junior, senior and executive suites, as well as two luxurious presidential suites. Price per night varies depending on the type of room and the season. A standard double room costs around 100€ a night, while most of the deluxe rooms cost between 200 and 350€ a night. The cost of staying in one of the exclusive suites varies between 800 and 3424€ per night.

The hotel has 315 double rooms, as well as 30 rooms adapted for people with reduced mobility, and 12 suites. Enormous windows decorate the walls, and a multi use remote control controls the intensity of the lights and the window shutters. This remote control also controls the wooden panels that can be moved according to the guests’ desires, allowing each guest to design and divide their room the way they want to see it.

The two exclusive presidential suites are 140 squared metres each, and have two dormitories, two bathrooms, a hall, two walk in wardrobes, a living room and a dining room. One of the bedrooms has large, curved windows that stretch out from the floor to the ceiling, allowing guests to enjoy enviable views of the city. Guests can choose whether they want to stay at the black or the white suite.

The Puerta de America has several restaurants as well as a bar in the attic. The restaurants, found on the ground and top floors of the hotel, have magnificent views towards the vast city. The attic of this hotel is the ideal relaxation zone, with a funky bar which offers its guests a large variety of cocktails, and floors made of glass supported by great metal pylons which allow visitors to watch the bustling city right below their feet. In the attic guests will also be able to find the curious swimming pool decorated with black tiles.

This hotel also has a lobby where events can be organized. The 950 metre squared lobby has five different halls. This floor was designed by John Pawson. Several halls can be used for each event, and all halls have the best technological and audiovisual material and very high ceilings.

On the other floors of the hotel guests can also organize a variety of events, reunions, business meetings and celebrations. The fifth floor has 11 conference rooms designed by Victorio&Lucchino. Two of these rooms, V&L Black and V&L Silver, have a more elegant, dark design, making them the ideal locations for a party or a festival. The Parking Space floor was designed by Teresa Spacey, and is the most used location where numerous runway  and fashion shows have taken place. If visitors want to organize a conference or an event in a more stylish, avant-garde room with breathtaking views towards the city and the mountains, they can rent the hall on the thirteenth floor, which was also designed by Jean Nouvel.

Cube hotel in Navarra

The hotel chain “Testigos de la historia de Navarra” has several hotels situated in historic buildings all across the Spanish region of Navarra. Most of these buildings are now officially considered as historic heritage sites, and many of these structures are located in the most ancient and traditional regions of Navarra.

The Hotel Aire, or Air Hotel, is one of these many fascinating hotels, and is located three kilometers away from Tudela, the capital of the Ribera de Navarra region. This hotel is on the banks of the river Ebro.

This hotel was the idea of the López Rivera architects, and the main idea behind the creation of this hotel was to create an ideal place where guests would be able to relax. The buildings itself can be found in the small village of Bardenas, among vast fields and breathtaking views of the Bardenas Reales Natural Park. In this park, one can enjoy the quiet beauty of the desert and admire the original architecture of the building at dawn.

This hotel is rather small, and has only one floor. All the rooms are cube shaped, and have all kinds of details that make the visitors’ stay more comfortable. All rooms provide designer bathrobes to all guests. Some rooms also have their own private garden with a large fruit tree growing in the middle, and an exterior bathtub. Other rooms look more like pavilions or summerhouses, and can be found amongst the growing wheat crops. Some larger rooms are suites, have more living space and large exterior bathtubs in their private gardens. All rooms have a large double bed, a bathroom, a TV set, Internet access, a safe and a telephone. Guests can rent laptops near the reception office, and a pillow menu is offered for all guests to choose their favourite type of pillow.

The building has been restored recently, and now offers comfortable lodging to all guests. Its design is an interesting blend of rustic architecture and luxury, and on its territory guests can also find a swimming pool and a conference room. The hotel also has a charming patio covered with almond trees, autochthonous vegetation and a small orchard.

Like most hotels in the region, the Aire Hotel has a traditional restaurant where both guests and day trippers can taste a delicious meal at lunch or supper. All the meals are cooked by the hotel staff, and all the fruits and vegetables used in their preparation are grown in the hotel orchard. Their most famous dishes include the typical meals of the region, such as fruit or vegetable ragouts, called “menestra de verduras“.

Near the hotel, visitors are encouraged to visit the small medieval towns and cobbled streets, some of which remain unchanged, where one can breathe the atmosphere of history reigning in the area. The nearest city, Tudela, is also full of other historic buildings and monuments built in several architectural styles during different centuries, from the Roman and gothic styles to the renaissance and the barroque. Tourists can also visit the churches and palaces, most of which were built in the XIIth to the XVIIIth Centuries.

For those interested in the history and culture of the region, it is highly recommended to visit St. Mary’s Cathedral, which has been named a National Monument in 1984. It is also worth visiting the bridge over the river Ebro, which is right near the city entrance. The old bridge, with seventeen so called eyes, was a very important bridge used for commerce and transport during previous centuries. Magdalene’s Church, a church dating from the XIIth Century, is now a National Monument worth visiting, as is St. Nicholas’ Church, dating from the XVIth Century.

Hotel in an old Milk Shed

The Hotel La Posada de Alameda, is located in Alameda del Valle, near Madrid. The building, which used to be an old milking shed, has now been transformed into a small and curious hotel.

The three star hotel, located in the Northern Sierra of Madrid, used to be an old milk shed which was completely remodeled and later on transformed into a small and charming hotel. The old milk shed has nineteen double rooms, each one of them with a double bed and their own bathroom. Each room has a television, a telephone, a working desk and chair, a safe and a kingsize 2×2 bed. One of the main rooms also has a terrace. Price per night is between 93 and 106€, with an extra 22€ for an extra bed.

A Guest House in a Charter House

The Cartuja de Cazalla hotel is a small and slightly unusual hotel in an ancient charterhouse in Cazalla de la Sierra, in Seville, Spain. The century old Carthusian monastery used to belong to the Order of the Carthusians, and is located in the Northern Sierra of Seville.

The hotel is located in a very quiet and picturesque place. The historical monastery was built on a natural plateau, which in turn has thick walls and a 30 mere cliff guarding its perimeter. Those tourists who would like to stay here will have the best views of the Sierra Morena, and will enjoy sundowns and sunrises from the very heart of the Sevillian Sierra.

Near the hotel, tourists can find a natural water source and enjoy the amazing views around them. This site is considered to be a site of historical importance, since centuries ago it was a holy place for religious gatherings. Studies have managed to confirm that this site already existed before the Phoenicians opened the Silver Route. Nearby, one can still find the ruins of antique mosques and houses dating from the VIIIth Century, as well as some old mills.

The old building where the hotel is now used to be a mosque, and later on became a hunting house for the King. By the start of the XVth century, the building became the Monastery of the Jeronimos, and by the end of the XVth Century, the monastery became the Monastery of the Carthusian Order. The small decorated chapel then became known as the Pilgrim Chapel.

In the 1970’s, the building was bought, and was conserved as an historic building which housed the Center of Contemporary Art and Culture. It wasn’t until years later that the building was transformed into a small and comfortable hotel.

The hotel has a total of four suites in the monastery, as well as two individual rooms and eight double rooms in a small annex called the Hospederia. Each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom and comfortable furniture. Another house on the hotels territory, the Gardeners House, is ideal for accommodating large families or groups, and has two bedrooms, a large living room, a kitchen and a bathroom.
